Nestling in the heart of the ancient, now smart, clean city Tiruchirappalli, famous for its historical temples, rich culture and tradition is the KAPV government Medical College with its attached Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital.

Mahatma Gandhi, memorial government hospital, earlier named as Annal Gandhi Memorial government hospital was serving people of this region since 1857. The Hospital was earlier located at Gandhi market. In the year 1950, regular hospital building was built at Puthur.
EVR Maniammai Paediatric Block was started in 1967.
Dept. of Siddha Medicine was started in the year 1973
Blood Bank was inaugurated in the year 1979.
School of Nursing was inaugurated in the year 1980.
Lab exclusively for AIDS was opened in 1990.
The year 1997 was a turning point in the history of the hospital. Named after the renowned Tamil Scholar KAP Viswanatham, the KAPV government medical college was started to accommodate 100 Under graduate students . From then onwards, there was no looking back. The hospital and college have grown by leaps and bounds.
In the same year 1997—
a separate building for labour ward and main operation theatre started functioning ;
the Govt.Rajaji TB hospital was attached to the GH;
and The Radiology department with CT Scan facilities were added.
Approval was given from Medical Council of India for 100 MBBS seats
Para Medical Courses were created in the year 2005
In a span of 10 years, in 2007 Post graduate courses were started and MRI Scan was commissioned.
Neurology Department was started in 2008.
Psychiatric inpatient building and a new PG Hostel were started in 2010.
In the year 2013,MBBS Seats increased from 100 to 150 students.
The year 2014 saw the opening of the Super specialty Block with 6 floors
The hospital is running District Level Early International Centre (DEIC) since 2015, with team consisting of one pediatrician, and two social workers, physiotherapist and optometrist; they evaluate congenital problems like cleft lip and congenital dislocation of hip (CDH) for surgery. It is also screening, growth defects, cardiac problems and deaf mutism.
The Paediatrics Department runs a breast milk bank.
The eye donation program and body donation programs are also functioning effectively.
The MGMGH now has 1703 beds and 7 ICUs with all the Broad Speciality Departments and also Super Speciality Departments to give tertiary care to the public.

- Most of the beds, above 1300 were converted to oxygen beds under the guidance from DEAN, DME.
- More than 1200 covid inpatients were treated in our hospital everyday during peak period under the guidance from DEAN /DME and ensured sanitation and smooth supply of nutritious food to patients.
- We worked day and night to ensure smooth oxygen supply to all patients when there was a demand under the guidance of District Collector Tiruchirapalli, DRO,Dean, DME
- Three PSA plants were installed to provide uninterrupted oxygen supplyof under the guidance of DEAN,DME. One under PM CARES 1000lpm, another at 350lpm and another at 400 lpm were installed.
- We mobilised all resources to render utmost advanced care to all patients during covid pandemic.
First Time in Trichy Mahathma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital we organised successful live renal transplant from 2 live donors and then continuing successfully.
- First Time In Trichy Mahathma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital, we did diseased donor program of organ retrieval from brain death patients, and new life were given to deserving eligible recipients. Even in covid pandemic we were the first to do this in Tamilnadu
- We have done two more organ retrieval one each in last two months and kidney, liver, heart were successfully transplanted to various eligible recipients.
- As per chief secretary advice we did go clean hospital cleanliness program and effectively cleaned the hospital and plantation of trees were done.
- In most of the departmental services and actiivties we stand within 8 ranks among all medical colleges and continuosly working towards top rank
